In Isaiah 50:4-9, the prophet speaks of the Messiah, the suffering servant who will be exalted. David cries out in despair (Psalm 31:9-16), as he feels rejected by his people while he trusts in God for deliverance. In Philippians 2:5-11, Paul describes the self-emptying of Jesus: fully God and fully man. The theme of contrasts continues in John 12:12-19, as Jesus makes His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a humble donkey rather than a warrior horse reserved for kings.
